Gopaalrao Vidwans - the translator
Gopaalrao's mother tongue was Marathi and he was, obviously, quite fluent at it. Being born and brought up in Gujarat, he went to Gujarati school and mastered Gujarati language even better than his mother tongue. This put him in a uniquely advantageous position of being able to translate Marathi literary work into Gujarati, and he spared no effort to bring volumes of popular literature from one language into the other. In fact, during the later half of his life, he did very little else, and supported his family solely on the royalty income generated from the publications of his translations. In a span of about thirty years (1944 ~ 19975) he left Gujarati language enriched with some seventy-five books -novels, short story books, collections of essays, and books on education. In his own time he was a very popular translator, both among the publishers and the readers of his language.
